My Reading Life – Penny Frost McGinnis

The Eclectic Reader

I breathe a sigh of relief when I type “The End” on a completed manuscript, but as a reader “The End” means I’ve closed the cover of the book. So often, I yearn to know what happens to the characters after their story ends, or I want to live in the setting a while longer.

When I read Christy, by Catherine Marshall, I was in high school. I’ve reread the story at least eight times since then. Christy is the reason I love anything set in the Appalachian Mountains. Then there were the James Herriot stories. I devoured those and always hope an animal will appear in a story.

In my thirties, I worked in a public library. Heaven for a book lover like me. One day, as I shelved books, I discovered the Cat Who cozy mystery series. Two cats who helped solve crimes started me on my love of cozy mysteries. Somewhere along the way, I picked up the desire to read romantic suspense.

Now I’m in my sixties, and I am rarely without a book, if not two or three. I enjoy contemporary romance and women’s fiction, and on occasion I squeeze in a fairy tale, castles, kingdoms and knights and some historical, but my favorite read is my Bible. The book, filled with truth, grounds me and fills me with hope.

Plus, I read for research to inform my novels. In preparation to write Home At Last, which comes out this summer, I’ve researched the Klondike Gold Rush and treasure hunters. Those were fun to delve into.

I consider myself an eclectic reader, with only a few genres I don’t read. How about you? What’s your favorite genre?

I gravitate to Christian Historical Fiction but also like Suspense/mystery. There are a few contemporary authors that I don’t miss. And Women’s Fiction is great too. So I guess I am eclectic too.
    Not too fond of Amish.
