My Reading Life – Heather Kreke

Do you read books recommended for your “age group”?

I read a lot of Young Adult fiction, and I am not a young adult. Not even close. So why do I read YA?

In my opinion YA fiction is a misnomer. YA is full of compelling characters, and great story lines. The only thing that truly makes YA for young adults is the age of the characters. But in most YA those teenage characters are thrown into and have to deal with adult situations. Take The Hunger Games for example: Katniss is selected for a fight to the death and becomes the face of a rebellion. While she moves through her story arc she has to deal with some very adult emotions.

While I don’t usually read Middle Grade or Kids Books, there are a lot of good ones out there. When my kids were younger and I would read them chapter books, we would read a chapter or two a night. But you can bet after I read them chapter one and two, and they fell asleep, I spent the next thirty minutes finishing that book. Sometimes a light, easy read is exactly what I need.

I really don’t think it matters what the recommended age for a book is for. If the plot is there, a good story, is a good story.

I do enjoy books in other age groups, although I don’t read many. I did read the Twilight series in my forties! And I love reading to my girls.

I also enjoy reading YA and plan to read a bunch of children’s books to my granddaughter and future grandchildren hoping they will love reading as much as I do.
