Pages of My Life – Barb Britton

The early pages of my life were void of God. I grew up in a wonderful family, a moral family, but we didn’t own a Bible or go to church. I didn’t have a concept of a Creator, or that my sins were separating me from a God who loved me. Only God could take me on a journey where I would be an author of Bible stories, and ultimately a book about Jesus’s ministry.
I dedicated my latest devotional to the late Nancy Beckman. Mrs. Beckman was a neighbor who invited my mom to Bible Study Fellowship. Well, she invited some Christian friends to BSF and my mom said, “What about me?” Nancy was stunned, but she invited my mom anyway. Mom bought a Bible to attend and be part of the group. After studying the Bible, my mom discovered she didn’t know God and she trusted Jesus as her Savior.
Like it or not, my mom took my sister and I to church. We liked it! My sister and I trusted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. My dad came to church years later after witnessing a change in my mom.
The books I read as a child were Scholastic bestsellers. My family didn’t know about Christian books and way back then, there were very few Christian options. I am thankful that we are seeing more Christian Fiction written for children and young adults. I had been a Christian for two decades before I learned there were adult books written from a Christian worldview.
Even though I accepted Jesus as Lord in junior high, being an author wasn’t on my radar screen. I don’t know how to type, and grammar is not my strong suit. Stories would spin in my brain but never saw paper.
It wasn’t until I was in my forties, and I volunteered to teach chapel at a Christian School that God nudged me toward writing. I needed creativity to tweak curriculum, so I prayed for God to give me ideas. Boy, did He ever. I wrote three books that were sweet stories, but the stories didn’t talk about God. The fourth book I wrote was similar to a Bible story. The theme was God is in control in the chaos of life. That novel began my career writing Christian Fiction, especially Biblical Fiction.
Christian Fiction is written from a Christian worldview, but it must have faith thread that shines a light on God. If a book doesn’t shine a light on God, it’s a general story written by someone of faith or not of faith. I’m proud to write stories where I can talk about Jesus.
From sweet stories to Christian Fiction, and now to a book about Jesus’s ministry around the Sea of Galilee, God has led me on a writing journey I could not have planned or have even fathomed.
I am thankful that a neighbor included my mom in her Bible study group, so that my mom met Jesus and brought my sister and I to church. The pages of my life were void of God then, but now they are full of stories that include relationships with Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord!
