The Joy of Reading Together

It’s a pleasure to be back on the BRRC The Pages of My Life blog today. Honestly, I was stumped for a topic, but one of my writing Besties, Debb Hackett, suggested I write about how much fun it is to read a book together! So, I snatched her idea right up!

Reading is often thought of as a quiet, solitary pastime. A cozy chair, a cup of tea, and a good book to get lost in. But some of my richest reading experiences happened not when I was alone. They’ve happened when I’ve shared the journey with others. Reading together connects hearts, deepens understanding, and turns stories into shared memories.

Being Read To

There’s something magical about being read to, no matter your age. Maybe you remember curling up as a child while a parent brought bedtime stories to life. Or perhaps you’ve rediscovered that joy through audiobooks (I’ve shared this passion in prior blogs), or by reading aloud with a friend or spouse. When I was first married, hubby would read to me while I ironed his Army BDUs. These are still some of our fondest memories from the early years of our marriage.

Hearing words spoken brings rhythm and emotion that we might miss on the page. It slows us down and invites us to savor the language and the moment together.

Reading aloud can also be a wonderful way to bond across generations. Grandparents sharing classic tales, parents reading the Bible at the dinner table, or friends taking turns reading a novel on a long road trip—all these moments create memories built on story and love.

Book Clubs and Shared Discussions

Book clubs turn reading into community. Whether you meet in a cozy living room, over coffee at a local bookstore or café, or through an online group, discussing a book with others offers new insights and perspectives. Someone might notice symbolism you missed or interpret a character’s decision in a way that makes you see the story differently.

And the conversations often wander beyond the book—to real-life experiences, laughter, and even prayer. Stories connect us to our shared humanity and help us understand ourselves and each other more deeply.

What do you mean, ONE OF? I am your writing and life bestie (except for Jesus and Mike). Period.

This is good, Kelly, and so nice to see you in another venue. You hit it with this one — books and the ideas in them should be shared. There is nothing like reading to a child! And I’ve never been in a book club, but I’ve shared books informally with friends. I just put a quilter friend on to Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek Quilts series (kind of a crossover, not overtly Christian but nothing that offends). Such joy in being able to discuss the characters and their journeys!
