My Reading Life – Maryann Landers

Everything seems bigger in Alaska and a regular road trip can mean several hours of travel from one small town to a city. Listening to books has proved an excellent source of entertainment as we wind through the mountains and pause to watch moose and caribou. Years ago when the kids were younger my husband, the kids and I would completely absorb ourselves in the stories we listened to on CDs.

I’ve found pleasure in listening to the Biblical Fiction genre on my many trips across the state by myself this summer. Isaiah’s Daughter and Isaiah’s Legacy by Mesu Andrews were two stories that were hard to hear but they were interesting to me and challenged my faith. I was glad that I was by myself, wiping my tears and blowing my nose. It was difficult to listen to the rebellion and evil of kings of the past and the wake of hurt they left. It drew me to the old testament to read the Bible passages and see how these character’s stories brought the Word to life. I’m so glad that I didn’t return the audiobooks but finished them through to the end. I could both contrast and compare them to my own relationships over the years. We don’t have a guarantee of the legacy we will leave, but we answer to God for our own faith and obedience to Him. And, we shouldn’t lose heart but trust that God is a loving and tender Father, ready to forgive the most unimaginable trouble we bring to ourselves and others.

Sometimes stories are hard to absorb and process because of the content or the reality of it hits us where we’re at. I’m not looking for books where I’m crying, but I love it when they are very real and I can relate to the story and characters.

Maybe you’ll look for a good novel to listen to while you travel during these last few weeks of summer? What a great way to pass the time, learn and challenge your perspective.
